University Pastor/Dean for Spiritual Life, Inclusion, and Leadership
Position Overview:
The University Pastor/Dean for Spiritual Life, Inclusion, and Leadership provides oversight and supervision for the Office for Spiritual Life, Office for Parent and Family Programs, Serve Day, the Human Sexuality Care Initiative, and the common student leadership experience for student life. This dean is an active participant in the Student Life Leadership Team which reports to the Vice President for Student Life.
As lead University Pastor, this position encourages and promotes Christ-like community among our undergraduate students so that they will have the opportunity to understand and accept the Gospel and move toward spiritual maturity and a strong vision for God's work in the world. This "movement toward maturity" includes the development of a heart and mind that is responsive to God's call on the life of the individual as well as within the broader community in furthering Christ's Kingdom and priorities. The most visible aspect of the work of the University Pastor involves the development and implementation of the spiritual formation and chapel program that includes elements of Bible study, worship, discipleship, outreach, and service. In addition, the University Pastor articulates a strong vision for and oversees staff responsible for student-focused programs and initiatives related to student leadership. This individual engages the local and Portland-area church/pastoral community in a strategic and intentional way. Finally, the University Pastor should have an understanding of and appreciation for the Evangelical Friends tradition of the University.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Pastoral Duties and Responsibilities
- Preach and teach scripture within the community (including but not limited to chapel.) Be available to offer services associated with the pastoral office, such as blessing, commissioning, anointing, baptism, communion, etc.
- Faithfully pray for the university, the students, and the employees of George Fox.
- Be available to students and employees for prayer and spiritual counsel and mentoring relationships.
- Institutional Vision and Leadership
- In partnership with the Student Life Leadership Team and under the direction of the VPSL, provide collaborative leadership and foster an environment of flourishing in the student life division at George Fox.
- Develop and articulate a vision that is consistent with the university mission and is Christ-centered, Scripture-focused, worship and discipleship-oriented, actively engaged in God's work in the world (social justice), strategically designed to enhance community, dynamic, and engaging.
- Work collaboratively with faculty, administrators, and student life deans toward the holistic spiritual care of the university, its foundations, its practices, and its constituents.
- Program Leadership
- Support and equip the associate dean for spiritual life as he/she builds a vibrant chapel program and provides oversight for the operations of the office of spiritual life.
- Provide supervision, training, and evaluation for direct reports. Participate in supplemental training and hiring processes throughout the university which may further the spiritual flourishing of the employee community.
- Work alongside the director of parent and family programs to provide excellent support and communication for families of George Fox Ensure collaborative partnerships between the Office for Parent and Family Programs and other offices that resource our families (e.g., Student Life, President's Office, Student Accounts, Career and Academic Planning Center, Academic Resource Center, Financial Aid, etc.)
- Serve as the chair for the Human Sexuality Care Initiative Advisory Group. In partnership with the Director for the Human Sexuality Care Initiative, the Advisory Group, and the Vice President for Student Life, provide leadership and student care on issues related to the university's human sexuality and gender identity work within the context of the traditional theological understanding of the university.
- Provide budget oversight for the Office for Spiritual Life, the Office for Parent and Family Programs, and the Human Sexuality Care Initiative.
- Community Outreach and Engagement
- Actively engage and connect with the Portland-area and local church/pastoral community in intentional and strategic ways to equip George Fox University students with a vision and passion for the church and her work locally and globally.
- Provide ultimate oversight for the planning and implementation of the University-wide Serve Day that takes place annually on the third Wednesday of the fall semester.
- General Responsibilities
- Communicate effectively and courteously with others, including employees, students and the public, in a spirit of teamwork, respect and customer service.
- By actions, words and lifestyle, be a Christian role model to students, whether through casual contact or in a formal supervisory role.
- Demonstrates awareness, respect and appreciation for diversity of culture, background, race, sex, political views, expressions of faith, and works well with a variety of people.
Associated Duties:
- Work with the student belonging and equity department to support the University's mission by encouraging a campus climate that is welcoming, nurturing, and supportive for underrepresented students.
- Plan various events and programs designed to enhance the spiritual life of the George Fox University student community (i.e., Baccalaureate, etc.).
- Work with the student interns to provide opportunities and programs that reflect the University's core values and encourage the spiritual growth of students.
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements/Qualifications:
- An evangelical Christian commitment and lifestyle consistent with the institution's goals, including signed agreement (and personally held theological conviction) with GFU Statement of Faith and Community Lifestyle Statement and being in living agreement with same.
- Master's degree in a related field required; M. or doctoral degree preferred.
- A minimum of five years of full-time ministry experience; some pastoral work in a local church preferred.
- Strong understanding of and passion for the spiritual formation of Christian university students. Experience directly working with college students and counseling experience is desirable.
- Gifts of preaching, teaching, and pastoral discernment.
- Good planning and organizational skills; supervisory experience preferred.
- Strong interpersonal, communication and discipleship skills, particularly with college-aged students.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, orally and in writing, including on telephone, and to understand and follow instructions.
