University Environmental Health and Safety Specialist

Position Purpose

Position is accountable for the environmental, health and safety functions for the university. Implements and ensures compliance with environmental and safety training activities and programs intended to create a safe and healthy workplace. Use proven methods for identifying and eliminating hazards and reducing accidents as well as reducing the business impact on the environment. Influences university stakeholders to improve the university's environmental and safety efforts.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Serves as the principal technical advisor and subject matter expert to management at the university for the development, implementation and enforcement of safety, fire prevention and suppression, occupational health/safety and environmental programs, and workers' compensation programs
  • Develops safety and environmental programs designed to comply with specific regulatory requirements such as confined space entry, control of hazardous energy, machine guarding, fall protection, hazardous waste, chemical spill response, fire emergency response/evacuation, workers' compensation and hazard communication.
  • Develops and implements programs for hazardous waste and emergency response operations, recycling, pollution prevention, ozone reduction, stormwater management, lead and asbestos abatement, storage tank management, air pollution emissions and toxic chemical inventories.
  • Conducts the on-going specialized training for the community.
  • Actively participates in training documentation for lock out / tag out procedures, forklift operations, hazardous material handling and other areas of high risk exposure
  • Provides leadership for the Health, Safety and Environment Committee to ensure a safe working environment in compliance with government regulations and company procedures

  • Executes effective record keeping for various regulatory requirements
  • Assists with development of written safety procedures that are in alignment with regulatory guidelines
  • Participates in the appropriate corrective actions where health and safety hazards exist

Qualifications:

  • Evangelical Christian commitment and lifestyle consistent with the university's mission as described in the Statement of Faith and Community Lifestyle Statement on our website.
  • A commitment to working with a diverse population of people is essential; demonstrated experience in this area is preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience with environmental health and safety
  • Highly motivated, autonomous and proactive with a genuine interest in driving a culture of health and safety.
  • The ability to maintain confidentiality, display discretion and protect the privacy of information.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills.
  • Demonstrated professional attitude and excellent customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated strong attention to detail, organizational and analytical skills in business setting.
  • Must have permanent and unrestricted work authorization in the United States.
