Interim Area Coordinator (Position runs through May 24, 2022)

The Area Coordinator (AC) position is a live-in, 10 month position in our Residence Life Department. Under the supervision and guidance of the Director of Residence Life, ACs play a critical role within the residential community as mentors, advisors, and co-curricular educators for Resident Assistants (RAs), Assistant Area Coordinators (AACs), and residents, helping to deliver our Be Known Promise to all students at George Fox.

As a Christ-centered community, Residence Life at George Fox is committed to a culture of civility, respect, diversity, and inclusivity. It is imperative that the AC recognizes the multiple constituents that exist in our work with students, which includes the racial/ethnic minority students, majority culture students, first-generation students, and international students.

Our goal is to develop students with an inward, outward and forward focus, grounded in a Christ-centered context. The Area Coordinator functions as part of a team that is responsible for the overall strategic coordination of student success and university-wide retention efforts.

The following is designed to give a general overview of the AC position role and responsibilities:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Affirm the centrality and applicability of your Christian faith through behavior and expression of values and ideals which are the embodiment of that faith
  • Affirm the mission, goals and Christian foundation of George Fox University
  • Demonstrate support for the philosophy of Student Life, the programs of Residence Life, and the Community Accountability expectations as outlined in the Student Handbook
  • Demonstrate a willingness to journey with RAs, residents, and their developmental processing as a co-curricular educator at George Fox University
  • Provide experiences, training, and information to RAs which will promote their identity, leadership and faith development, as well as interpersonal competencies
  • Review RAs' progress toward goals; provide support, guidance, and redefinition of those goals
  • Meet with RAs individually and as a team each week to disseminate information, provide training experiences, foster personal and professional growth, and develop a sense of team cohesiveness and vision
  • Support the RA staff in their on-call responsibilities, including developing and maintaining the RA on-call rotation schedule

Serve as a Resource and Support to Students in Residential Area:

  • Develop and maintain a residential environment that helps create a sense of belonging and equitable participation of all groups, while modeling ways to acknowledge and actively confront and address issues of intolerance or bias that may arise within the community
  • Develop area programming to achieve student success and retention
  • Assist residents in resolving conflict with others through providing guidance on how to resolve conflicts peacefully and respectfully, and referring conflicts to appropriate staff members as needed
  • Initiate and follow appropriate institutional crisis intervention responses and processes in a timely manner

Serve as a Member of the Residence Life Team:

  • Attend and participate in weekly Residence Life orientations, training sessions, and meetings as convened by the Director of Residence Life or her/his designee
  • Respond to violations of lifestyle standards, community policies, and other aspects of being a member of the George Fox community
  • Report Title IX incidents to immediate supervisor in a timely manner
  • Partner with other members of the Residence Life Team to facilitate and develop training in August and January for Residence Life
  • Maintain on-call responsibilities during weekends (scheduled on a rotating basis) and respond to Assistant Area Coordinator for weekly duty support

Serve as an Administrator:

  • Oversee the check-in/check-out procedures for your area
  • Oversee the budget, including area programming and staff training and development
  • Coordinate with the Housing Office room changes and room assignments
  • Conduct routine inspections of the residential area under your care and promptly report damages and/or vandalism using work order system; promptly report all maintenance needs via work order system
  • Participate in Residence Life Staff Recruitment and Hiring and Residence Life Program evaluations; complete evaluations, reports and forms as requested by the Director of Residence Life
  • Observe all University policies related to conduct and confidentiality, i.e. Code of Ethics, FERPA

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree required; Masters Degree in Higher Education, Student Development or other related field preferred
  • 2-3 years of progressive leadership experience working with college students; 4-5 years preferred
  • Competence in relational, interactive, and conflict mediation skills
  • Competence in administrative and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated engagement in faith development; personal commitment to faith in Christ
  • Demonstrated consciousness of diversity, equity, and inclusion issues and commitment to addressing issues of oppression, privilege, and power
  • An evangelical Christian commitment and lifestyle consistent with the institution's goals, including signed agreement with GFU Statement of Faith and Community Lifestyle Statement and being in living agreement with the same.
