Sample George Fox Digital Instructor Job Description

George Fox Digital Instructor

At George Fox University, we place a high value on excellent teaching'both in person and online. Through our George Fox Digital (GFD) initiative, our online course offerings serve an increasing number of our undergraduate students. Though we utilize per-course adjuncts and student teaching assistants for our online courses alongside our traditional, full-time instructors to help teach larger sections, our programs have grown to the point where we are now seeking full-time help from qualified digital specialists who can partner with primary content instructors across disciplines and assist with several different courses at the same time.

The position of Instructor within George Fox Digital is responsible for assisting a primary course instructor (usually, but not always, a full-time professor in a given field) with administering GFD sections of online courses. Many of these courses will be situated with our university's new "Cornerstone" general education program, as we are committed to offering these core experiences to students both in person and online each academic year (including the summer online). The GFD Instructor is not usually tasked with creating content for courses, or responsible for answering student questions or concerns about content in most cases (that is the role of the primary instructor). Rather, she or he is tasked with helping the primary instructor administer the course and providing an excellent educational experience for students by way of enhanced communication and organization of the course'including helping to organize course pages, answering student questions and facilitating access accommodations, and providing equitable, prompt grading support.

Occasionally, it may also be the case that a GFD Instructor takes charge of a digital course that has already been created and then fully facilitates that course for the students (in which case she/he may need to engage students on the level of course content in certain ways). When in this "full facilitation" role, the university will strive to involve the instructor who created the content in the course as a content resource for the GFD Instructor, so that students feel supported and experience the presence of the instructor who created the content.

Number of courses, credits, and students: Our working model--subject to change--is that the GFD Instructor will assist with a load that mirrors full-time instruction at GFU, with a 4-4 (24 cr.) load, extended also into the summer for another 4 courses (12 cr.), for a 12-month, 36-cr. load. However, in situations where single courses within the load far exceed normal student enrollment (e.g., above 100), the GFD team will work with the Administrative Instructor to set a load that fairly distributes the work among fewer courses in a given semester.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work closely with the George Fox Digital leadership and instructional design team to determine priorities, schedule, and specific work rhythm as the GFD courses require.
  • Work closely with the main (content-providing) instructor in assigned courses to ensure students have transformative educational experiences.
  • Act in capacity as the GFD Instructor for courses each academic term'fall, spring, and summer. This includes (1) helping the primary instructor use the GFD template on Canvas to set up the course appropriately; (2) consulting with the GFD learning design team and the primary instructor to map out course content, assignments, and assessment; (3) communicating with students and responding to inquiries about administrative issues such as grades, disability and accessibility, navigating material, and related things; (4) assisting the main instructor with the grading (e.g., setting up and monitoring online quizzes; assessing student discussions; exams; registering mid-term and final grades; etc.). In cases where the GFD Instructor's specialty academic area qualifies her/him to grade written work (or other complex assignments), using a more subjective standard, the main instructor may delegate some of this work to the GFD Instructor. In other cases, the main instructor will be expected to grade written work or more complex assignments.
  • Serve as the primary liaison for their courses to our Disability and Accessibility office, ensuring that students receive proper accommodations (e.g., extra time on quizzes, closed captioning--coordinated through the GFU IT services, and managing the system of DAS contracts between instructors and students).
  • Other duties may include assisting the George Fox Digital team with digital projects within the scope of its mission, as well as working with the Learning Design team on key GFD initiatives. (These "other" duties would take on greater or less significance depending on the exact situation each semester with courses; e.g., it may be the case that because of the particular needs of our instructors, a given semester may only have two or three courses to teach, and there would be other duties within GFD for the administrative instructor to occupy at those times.)

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in a relevant humanities field preferred (broadly conceived: theology, literature, history, art/design); BA-level candidates with requisite skills and experience may be considered
  • Teaching and course design experience in digital formats
  • Strong communication skills and ability to maintain active and timely communication during the workweek both with the primary instructors of courses as well as students in the courses
  • Experience and knowledge working with a diverse range of students
  • Understanding of disability/accessibility accommodations and issues; commitment to providing all students with equal access to course materials
  • Ability to occasionally work on nights and weekends as the course rhythms require

Supervises: Occasional work-study students, depending on their availability as determined by each course/department

Reports To: Vice President of George Fox Digital

Contract type: faculty administrator; non-tenure track; contracts are issued for one full year, with the possibility (not guarantee) of renewal for additional years or semesters
