First Generation Student Success Coordinator and Project Manager

Limited Term Position


Position Summary:

The First Generation Student Success Coordinator is responsible for providing programming and direct support services to help students who are the first in their family to attend a four-year institution make the transition to the George Fox community. The Coordinator will pay particular attention to connecting students to available resources on campus, establishing a sense of belonging on campus, and working collaboratively with academic programs to recruit and support the success of first generation college students.

In addition to their primary responsibilities of supporting current first-generation students, the Coordinator will also serve as a Project Manager for the Liberation Scholars program. This program is a collaborative effort to increase access to the humanities for potential first generation students. This intentional collaboration allows the Coordinator to develop and establish critical community partnerships that will ultimately serve current students.


This position is partially grant-funded and will be reviewed after the three-year grant has ended.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assist with the design and development of retention activities for first-generation students
    1. Actively participate in the on-going development of the first-year experience
    2. Collaborate with the IDEA Center to conduct valuable workshops to help launch first generation students into their chosen careers
    3. Develop and implement workshops for parents and families in collaboration with the Director of Parent and Family Relations
    4. Research and design a Summer Bridge program engage first-year students, who identify as first-generation, in their transition to George Fox
  2. Provide direct support services
    1. Meet individually with first generation students to address academic, social, emotional, and financial needs
    2. Collaborate with the Student Support Network to develop early identification of at-risk students
    3. Work closely with faculty advisors to develop and implement a successful academic plan for students who are identified as at-risk
  3. Create and provide resources to help first generation students navigate their college experience
    1. Create and deliver content via social media that covers relevant topics and practices for first generation students
    2. Develop partnerships both on campus and off campus in order to identify opportunities for first generation students to further develop personally, professionally, and spiritually
  4. Serve as the Project Manager for the Liberation Scholars program (hours per week will vary depending on the time of year).
    1. Serve as the primary administrator for the summer residential program
      1. Lead a team of Residential Teaching Assistants (students) and the Assistant Project Manager, including facilitating a 3-day orientation training
      2. Provide on-site crisis management and crisis response for the duration of the two weeks
      3. Coordinate details between partnering departments
      4. Execute logistics alongside the programming team
      5. Work with the Principal Investigator to determine and provide on-site coverage.
    2. Work collaboratively with the Principal Investigator to execute program details during the academic year
      1. Coordinate bi-monthly site visits between the Liberation Scholars and their mentors
      2. Lead a team of 4-5 student interns through the fall and spring semesters
      3. Assist in the recruitment and selection of scholars in the spring
      4. Assist in event planning as needed
  5. Support the day-to-day functions of the Intercultural Resource Center in conjunction with the Director of Intercultural Life and Administrative Assistant.
  6. Communicate effectively and courteously with others, including employees, students and the public, in a spirit of teamwork, respect and customer service
  7. Demonstrates awareness, respect and appreciation for diversity of culture, background, race, sex, political views, expressions of faith, etc. and works well with a variety of people
  8. Other duties as assigned by the Director of Intercultural Life and the Principal Investigator

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's Degree required
  2. Previous work with first-generation undergraduate students, a student-centered mindset, and understanding of how racial minority status, ethnic minority status, and socio-economic status impact the first-generation experience
  3. Proficiency with multiple software and social media programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Canva, etc.
  4. Ability to manage a number of different tasks efficiently and concurrently
  5. Excellent interpersonal communication skills (both written and verbal) and ability to build networks
  6. Spanish language proficiency preferred.
  7. An evangelical Christian commitment and lifestyle consistent with the institution's goals, including signed agreement with GFU Statement of Faith and Community Lifestyle Statement and being in living agreement with same.
