Position Summary

Administrator, full time, 10 month

 

This position will work with students, faculty and staff who utilize the Department of Art & Design's facilities and equipment. The successful candidate will provide oversight of the facility maintenance including supplies, equipment, materials and chemistry in all labs, shops and studio spaces. Reports to Chair, Department of Art and Design

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Overseeing the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the studio/lab/classroom facilities, ensuring that all equipment operates effectively and safely, facilities are clean and efficient, supplies are stocked and available, equipment and work are stored properly, and major obstructions are removed from around machinery and work areas. Managing multiple tasks and projects, making administrative/procedural decisions.
  • Managing the department operating budget related to studio supplies and equipment, providing detailed estimated budgets for projects. Advising the department on funding needs to adequately maintain the facilities and assisting in the prioritization of fiscal resources for various projects. Overseeing the purchasing of supplies, equipment, and services an assisting the department coordinator with inventory.
  • Assisting the day classes conducted in the ceramics and sculpture, 2D, 3D design, print media, photography and drawing/painting area facilities by providing technical and safety help and appropriate training; providing instruction to students covering woodworking and fabrication processes and techniques to help the students complete their work, to include providing workshops and occasional one-on-one consultations.
  • Supervising, instructing, and mentoring student work study positions in daily routing work. Conducting mandatory shop safety training for all students, faculty and staff who utilize the facilities; providing technical assistance to students, faculty and staff unfamiliar with the equipment or procedures in the Ceramics and Sculpture Studios.
  • Teaching one class per semester within the Art & Design curriculum.
  • Repairing defective hand and power tools or servicing machinery.

Essential Functions

  • Ability to efficiently operate a personal computer and associated software (Outlook, Word, Excel, google office suite etc.).
  • Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.
  • Ability to interact in an effective and appropriate manner with diverse student and staff populations, the University community and the public.
  • Ability to detect and correct grammatical and spelling errors in written correspondence.
  • Ability to perform carpentry/building.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

 

 

Physical Requirements

  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis
  • Able to use hands to manipulate equipment

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Visual Arts. Master of Fine Arts in studio arts, or a related field preferred
  • Must have experience maintaining art studio, lab, workshop and or machine shop facility.
  • Must have the ability to work effectively with a diverse community of students and faculty in the use of equipment and application of processes and techniques towards achievement of creative goals.
  • Must be able to work independently and troubleshoot problems with minimal supervision.
  • Must have demonstrated ability to deliver professional service, educational training and consultation, and effective team project work.
  • Must have strong communication, collaboration, organizational and time management skills including the ability to multi-task, prioritize, and independently manage a changing workload and schedule in a wide variety of settings and situations.
