Director of Exhibitions and University Art Collections

Position Summary:

The Director of Exhibitions and Collection Management is envisioned as a full time, 11 month position working collaboratively with the Office of the President, Office of Advancement and the Department of Art and Design.

The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, with a commitment to the care and management of art objects, a willingness to work one-on-one with students, and an appreciation for museum collections and university exhibition programs and their role in expanding art appreciation and knowledge of art history to the campus community and the region. Fundraising for the exhibitions program and a vision for visual arts community engagement with the city of Newberg, Yamhill County, and the greater Portland metro is essential.

 

Responsibilities Include:

  • Fiscal management and stewardship for both exhibition and collection programs
  • Fundraising for the exhibition and collection programs
  • Casting vision for local and regional arts engagement and partnership in university exhibition and collection resources
  • Managing the exhibition program of the Minthorne and Lindgren Galleries (10 exhibits per year)+additional exhibit spaces will be added with the construction of a new art and design center
  • Cataloging new collections as received and updating existing object information
  • Researching, photographing, and scanning existing collections into museum registration software
  • Managing loans to and from the collection including the changing exhibition program and art objects in campus offices, departments and buildings; maintaining accuracy of database information for movement of collections
  • Overseeing the fine arts insurance information for the university collections, as well as temporary exhibitions and loans
  • Coordination of public relations activities including social media for areas of responsibility
  • Supervising interns and work-study students working with the collections and exhibition program
  • Teaching undergraduate courses in museum studies or arts administration as needed
  • Collaborating with the visiting practitioner program "Art Talk" run by Dept. of Art and Design

 

Job Responsibilities are divided as such:

  • 30% gallery exhibition management including supervision of student staff
  • 30% Brandt and Isom Collection management including supervision of student staff
  • 25% fundraising for the collection management, exhibition programs including staff salaries
  • 15% Teaching one course in museum studies or arts administration per year

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree plus three years of arts administration experience OR Master's degree with two years of arts administration experience
  • Experience with museum collections software, Adobe Creative Suite, and MS Office/Google Office
  • Excellence in writing skills and a track record of success in grant writing
  • Comfort working in a collaborative environment
  • Demonstrated excellence in organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of and appreciation for art history and visual communication
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule as necessary, including some evenings and weekends.
  • The ability to safely handle art objects, both heavy and fragile
  • Experience in or aptitude for hiring, managing, and mentoring a staff of undergraduate student interns and work-study students.
  • Affirmation of GFU community faith and lifestyle statements, and demonstrated ability to integrate university values with work

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of standard art museum collection management policies including: acquisition and divestment, records management, etc.
  • Familiarity with fine arts insurance and risk management including emergency preparedness, security and fire protection systems, art handling, packing, shipping, and integrated pest management/inherent vice management
  • Knowledge of collections ethics, sensitivity to care of sacred and culturally sensitive objects, copyright law, and rights and reproduction management.
  • Previous work experience in a non-profit, arts administration and or gallery/museum collections of the PDX metro or schools in the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities.
  • Experience teaching museum studies, arts administration courses, and or not for profit arts management courses at the undergraduate level
