Costume Construction Consultant
Workload: 16-20 hrs. per week, 18-22 weeks
Employment period and status: Limited Term and Intermittent, 2020-21
Position Overview
Provides oversight of costume elements for all university theatre productions; oversees construction and implementation of designs for costumes, hair and makeup, including management of costume facilities, promotion of a safe learning environment, teaching effective production techniques to work-study students and volunteers, management of budget, purchasing of materials and tools, and attendance at production meetings and dress rehearsals.
Primarily Responsibilities
- Supervise and implement all costume, hair and makeup elements for three main-stage productions.
- Establish and maintain production calendar with timelines for all costume, hair and makeup elements.
- Determine best methods of costume construction to ensure timely, cost-effective, and highest quality productions.
- Purchase, drape, and cut fabric. Develop patterns and technical flats as needed.
- Train, and supervise scene shop employees and novice student volunteers, teaching industry standards and safe construction techniques.
- Provide hands-on support to student designers of costumes, hair, and makeup; provide support to makeup, costume crafts, and wig crews.
- Supervise wardrobe and costumes at load-in, technical and dress rehearsals, and strike.
- Purchase and maintain costume shop supplies and equipment.
- Administer costume, hair and makeup budgets.
- Ensure maintenance of a clean and organized costume shop and storage spaces.
- Coordinate use and return of costume inventory for on and off-campus groups.
- Attend weekly meetings with production artistic staff, the design/tech faculty member and student costume-shop leadership.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in technical theatre or related field required; additional professional training (MFA in technical theatre or design) preferred.
- A minimum of 3 years experience in costume construction.
- Excellent understanding of stage costume construction standards, practices, and safety.
- Competency in theatrical makeup, hair, and costume crafts.
- Demonstrated ability to manage employees and/or volunteers and ensure shop safety.
- Collaborative attitude and interest in working with students in a Christ-centered environment.
