Assistant Director of Campus Recreation

Position Overview:

In Collaboration with the Director of Campus Recreation, the Assistant Director provides leadership, oversight, programming and vision for the Student Center (SC) opening in August 2018. The Assistant Director of Campus Recreation will oversee the creation and implementation of programming for the climbing wall, outdoor rental center, and outdoor adventure programs.

  1. Assist the Director of Campus Recreation (DCR) with the development of the new Student Center (SC). This includes the creation of policies & procedures, daily operations, programming, staffing, and marketing aspects of the SC.
  2. Assist the DCR with the recruiting, hiring, training, supervision, scheduling and evaluation of the SC student employees.
  3. Provide leadership and supervision for the climbing wall including the creation of policies and procedures, staff training and supervision, and special events/programs.
  4. Provide leadership and direction for the outdoor equipment rental center including the purchase and management of inventory, budgeting, and the creation of policies and procedures.
  5. Develop and supervise an outdoor adventure program including the creation of a student guide development program, risk management plan and marketing plan.
  1. Develop and supervise an outdoor orientation program designed to serve incoming undergraduate students.
  2. Develop and manage a comprehensive risk management plan and maintain a record keeping system for all areas within the program.
  1. Design and lead field-based staff trainings and serve as a trip leader as appropriate.
  2. Facilitate team building and leadership development activities across campus. This includes the development, implementation and teaching involved with such programs.
  3. Utilize various assessment measures to gauge student interest and develop new program offerings based on student feedback.
  4. Create measurable outcomes for the climbing wall, rental center, and outdoor adventure program and establish the collection, analyzation, and reporting of data.
  5. Communicate effectively and courteously with others, including employees, students and the public, in a spirit of teamwork, respect and customer service.
  6. By actions, words and lifestyle, be a Christian role model to students, whether through casual contact or in a formal advisory role.
  7. Other duties as assigned.
  8. Master's degree in Outdoor Recreation, College Student Affairs or a related field is preferred. Bachelor's degree required.
  9. Minimum of one year professional experience in outdoor adventure programming, student activities, student involvement, recreational sports, climbing walls, other applicable leadership within student life, or ability to demonstrate transferable skills.
  10. An evangelical Christian commitment and lifestyle consistent with the university's mission as described on our website.

  12. Ability to challenge, support, mentor, interact with and relate to college students.
  13. Possess these strengths: communication, honesty, integrity, relational, interpersonal, problem solving, organizational and administrative skills, dependability, initiative (self-starter), flexibility, remaining calm in high pressure situations, forward thinking, envisioning big picture and detail oriented.
  14. Availability and willingness to work some evening and weekends.
  15. Current Wilderness First Responder (WFR) or higher, CPR and AED training and certification.
  16. Currently hold, or be willing to obtain, applicable climbing wall instructor (PCIA, AMGA, PCGI, CWI) certification.
  17. Demonstrated effective experience, knowledge, and ability to instruct rock climbing (beginning to advanced skills), and facilitate climbing wall instructor training.
  18. Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
