George Fox University is seeking a relationally focused, task oriented, values driven Assistant Director of Campus Recreation. This is a 12-month position that provides oversight, direction, and programming for George Fox University Campus Recreation. The Assistant Director is primarily responsible for managing all aspects of a comprehensive intramural sports program (including eSports), fitness classes and services, fitness facility management, and special events. The Assistant Director is also heavily involved with Campus Recreation administrative duties, training, supervision, program planning and development, and risk management.

Administrative Duties: 40%

  • Assist the Director of Campus Recreation (DCR) with the development of the Hadlock Student Center (HSC) and Campus Recreation. This includes the creation and implementation of policies & procedures, daily operations, programming, staffing, budgeting, marketing, and long-term planning.
  • Assist the DCR with the recruiting, hiring, training, supervision, scheduling and evaluation of Campus Recreation student employees.
  • Develop and manage a comprehensive risk management plan for each program area and maintain a record keeping system that helps improve risk management
  • Utilize various assessment measures and tools to measure outcomes and use evaluation to develop new program offerings based on student feedback.
  • Create measurable outcomes for the intramural sport program, fitness programs, and special events, and establish the ongoing collection, analyzation, and reporting of data.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Program Supervision & Leadership: 50%

  • Provide leadership, supervision, and development for all aspects of the intramural sports program, including the creation and enforcement of policies and procedures, staff training and supervision, risk management, assessment, and events/programs.
  • Develop intramural eSports program within intramural sports and work closely with campus stakeholders to collaborate on the ongoing development of program including events, staffing, budgeting, and related activities.
  • Provide leadership, supervision, and development for all aspects of fitness programs, including the creation of policies and procedures, staff training and supervision, risk management, assessment, and events/programs.
  • Develop, plan, and implement special events and work closely with campus and community stakeholders to collaborate on ongoing development of recreational events with attention to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Examples include fun runs, large tournaments, rec fest, fitness challenges, etc.
  • Work closely with and support student coordinators and student managers of each program area to develop program offerings and supervise staff.
  • Communicate effectively and courteously with others, including employees, students and the public, in a spirit of teamwork, respect and customer service.
  • By actions, words and lifestyle, be a Christian role model to students, whether through casual contact or in a formal advisory role.

Facility Management: 10%

  • Manage the Hadlock Student Center fitness center including the maintenance of equipment, purchasing plan for new equipment, and risk management of area.
  • Maintain facility schedules, including reservations, rentals, and club activities.
  • Work with DCR to ensure rentals and reservations are updated and addressed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required. Degree in student affairs, recreation management, exercise science, kinesiology, or sport management is preferred.
  • Minimum of one year of professional experience in recreation programming, sport management, fitness management or leadership, student activities, other applicable leadership, or ability to demonstrate transferable skills.

  • Possess these strengths: communication, honesty, integrity, relational, interpersonal, problem solving, organizational and administrative skills, dependability, initiative (self-starter), flexibility, remaining calm in high pressure situations, forward thinking, envisioning big picture and detail oriented.
  • Availability and willingness to work some evenings and weekends.
  • Currently hold, or be willing to obtain, AED, CPR, First Aid certification.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree preferred. Degree in recreation management, sport management, sport administration, exercise science, or related field is preferred.
  • Prior experience in collegiate recreation or fitness leadership or administration.
  • A comprehensive and demonstrated understanding of collegiate intramural sports programs, operations, and services.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising staff, including student employees and/or interns, preferably in a fitness facility, recreation, or sport environment.
